What are the visa and residence requirements in Cyprus?

Cyprus as a destination for life and work

Cyprus is an increasingly popular destination not only among tourists, but also people planning a longer stay, remote work, investments or retirement in a sunny climate. A stable economy, membership in the European Union and a friendly legal environment make moving to the island extremely attractive – but it requires certain formalities.

In this article, we will outline the visa and residence requirements in Cyprus – for both EU citizens and non-EU citizens. You will learn what the Yellow Slip and Pink Slip are, what are the residence options for investors or digital nomads, and what the process of legalizing your stay on the island looks like.

Residence for EU citizens – what formalities must be met?

European Union citizens can freely enter Cyprus and stay there for up to 90 days without any formalities. However, if you plan to stay longer – work, study, run a business or simply live – you need to register as a resident.

Yellow Slip – mandatory residence permit

After 90 days of stay, every EU citizen must obtain a so-called EU Person Registration Certificate, known as a Yellow Slip. This is an official confirmation of legal residence in Cyprus.

To obtain it, you must apply to the Civil Registry and Migration Department and provide:

  • a valid passport or ID card,
  • proof of address (e.g. rental agreement),
  • proof of employment, running a business or sufficient financial resources (for unemployed people),
  • health insurance (if you are not employed),
  • MEU1 form – available online and at offices.

After submitting the documents, you will receive a Yellow Slip in the form of a paper certificate. The document does not have an expiration date, but it confirms your right to permanent residence.

Is the Yellow Slip mandatory?

Yes – without it, you won’t be able to open a bank account, register a company or sign many contracts (e.g. long-term rental). This is an absolute must if you plan to live in Cyprus for more than 3 months.

Additional steps after registration:

  • Obtaining a Social Insurance Number – required for work.
  • Registration in the tax system (if you work or run a business).
  • Optional: notification to the public health system (GESY).

Summary:

For EU citizens, the formalities are relatively simple, but it is crucial to register your residence by obtaining a Yellow Slip. It is a document that opens the way to legal work, public services and life in Cyprus without time limits.

Residency and visas for non-EU citizens

Non-EU nationals need to complete more formalities to legally reside and live in Cyprus. Depending on the purpose of your stay – work, study, business, retirement – different types of visas and permits are required.

Entry to Cyprus without a visa (short stay)

Citizens of many countries, m.in. the USA, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, Ukraine or Japan, can enter Cyprus on the basis of a passport and stay up to 90 days without a visa.

This only applies to a tourist or private stay. If you want to work, run a business or stay for a longer period of time, you need the appropriate permit.

Temporary Residence Permit – Pink Slip

The Pink Slip is a document that allows a non-EU person to stay in Cyprus for more than 90 days – but without the right to work (unless work residency has been requested).

The most common concerns:

  • accompanying EU family members;
  • retired people,
  • people living on their own funds,
  • Students.

To obtain the Pink Slip, you must apply to the Immigration Department and provide:

  • A passport valid for at least 2 years.
  • confirmation of accommodation in Cyprus,
  • financial resources for maintenance (e.g. account statements),
  • health insurance
  • Proof of registration with your local authority.

The Pink Slip is valid for 1 year with the possibility of annual renewal.

Work and residence permit

To legally work in Cyprus as a non-EU citizen, you must have:

  • Approval of a job offer from a Cypriot employer
  • Work & residence permit
  • D visa (National Visa) – if you are entering with the intention of working

This process is usually initiated by the employer, who must prove that they cannot hire an EU citizen for the position.

Summary:

For non-EU citizens, staying in Cyprus involves more formalities. Short stays are possible without a visa, but longer stays, work or studies require permits such as a Pink Slip or D visa.

Types of residence permits – temporary and permanent

There are several forms of legalisation of stay in Cyprus – both for EU and non-EU citizens. Choosing the right document depends on the length and purpose of your stay, as well as your residency status.

Yellow Slip – residence for EU citizens (residence registration)

The previously discussed Yellow Slip is a registration certificate that confirms the legal residence of an EU citizen in Cyprus. It has no expiry date and serves as a permanent residence document for an indefinite period – as long as the person remains active (working, studying or has a means of living).

Pink Slip – temporary residence for non-EU nationals

Also, the previously mentioned Pink Slip is a temporary residence permit for non-EU people who want to legally live in Cyprus for more than 90 days – without working (unless the application is for work stay). Validity: 1 year, renewable.

Permanent Residence Permit

Cyprus offers the opportunity to apply for permanent residence (residency) for people who:

  • reside legally in Cyprus for a minimum of 5 years (in the case of EU citizens),
  • or invest in real estate of a certain value (in the case of non-EU citizens),
  • or are family members of a Cypriot national.

This status gives you the right to stay indefinitely and access to the labour market and public benefits.

Permanent Residency via Investment

For non-EU citizens, there is also a fast track to obtaining permanent residency by investment.

Requirements:

  • purchase of real estate with a value of min. €300,000 net (plus VAT),
  • documentation of legal funds,
  • annual income from outside Cyprus at the level of min. €30,000 (plus an allowance for each family member).

The whole process usually takes 2 to 6 months. Residency is granted for an indefinite period of time and can later be the basis for applying for citizenship.

Summary

You can get different types of residency in Cyprus – from temporary registration to permanent residency and investment residency. The choice depends on your nationality, length of stay, and life plans on the island.

Special stay programs – for investors, retirees and digital nomads

Cyprus tries to attract people from abroad not only as tourists, but also as long-term residents. For this reason, it offers several special programs that make it easier to obtain residency rights, especially for those who are not professionally connected with Cypriot companies.

Residence for investors

For non-EU people who want to gain quick and legal access to stay in Cyprus, there is the so-called Permanent Residency via Investment.

Requirements:

  • Purchase of a new property (from a developer) with a net value of at least EUR 300,000,
  • Documented fixed income from abroad,
  • Payment min. €30,000 to a Cypriot bank account (3-year blockade),
  • No criminal record.

Advantages:

  • The process takes only a few months
  • The residence is for an indefinite period of time
  • Possibility to apply for citizenship after a few years

Program for pensioners and non-employed people

Cyprus is a popular destination for retirees, mainly from the UK and Western Europe. People who want to live on the island without taking up work can apply for a Non-Lucrative Permit, a type of Pink Slip.

Conditions:

  • Passive income or pension (usually min. €9,500-€12,000 per year)
  • Proof of residence (e.g. lease agreement or title deed)
  • Health insurance
  • Unemployed in Cyprus

This type of residency can be renewed every year and after a few years, you can apply for permanent residency.

Digital Nomads – Digital Nomad Visa

Recently, Cyprus has also been offering a digital nomad visa – designed for people working remotely for foreign companies.

Requirements:

  • Remote work for a company outside Cyprus or own business outside the island
  • Monthly income min. €3,500 net (plus more if you have a family)
  • Health insurance and residence
  • No intention to provide services to local businesses

The visa is issued for 1 year with the possibility of extending for another 2 years.

Advantages:

  • Legal residence without tax obligations in the first year
  • Fast track to residence
  • Possibility of living in Cyprus without being tied to the local labour market

Summary:

Cyprus focuses on a modern approach to migration and offers attractive options for investors, pensioners and people working remotely. If you are not planning on classic employment, you can take advantage of one of the programs tailored to your lifestyle.

How to live legally in Cyprus?

Cyprus offers a wide range of opportunities to legalise your stay – both for EU citizens and non-EU nationals. The procedures are transparent and the requirements themselves are relatively mild compared to many other European countries.

Top Stay Options:

  • EU citizens – they do not need a visa, but after 90 days they must obtain a Yellow Slip – a document confirming legal residence.
  • Non-EU citizens – must have a visa and apply for a Pink Slip (temporary stay) or other permit depending on the purpose of their stay.
  • Permanent residence – possible after a few years of residence or by investment in real estate.
  • Special programs – for investors, retirees and digital nomads – allow you to stay legally and comfortably without having to work locally.

Tip: Before moving, it is worth consulting a local immigration advisor or lawyer – this will help you avoid formal mistakes and speed up the process of legalizing your stay.
